Administrative history: The merger of the Departments of Animal Husbandry and Poultry Husbandry and the field of Veterinary Science Instruction established the Department of Animal Science with Professor G.W. Woods as Head in 1937. The Departments had been housed in the Dairy Husbandry building since 1918. With financial support from the provincial Department of Agriculture and the support of Dean J.R. Weir, a massive construction and staffing program began in the Faculty that resulted in the opening of a new Animal Science building in 1962. Almost concurrently, poultry research units, a sheep barn, and a feed mill were constructed on campus. The first Ph.D. students graduated from the Department in 1967. Professor G.C. Hodgson and Dr. P.A. Kondra of the Department helped establish the University of Khon Kaen in northern Thailand.
Custodial history: The Department transferred records to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections in 1988. In the same year, Professor Steven Stothers, Head of the Department of Animal Science, donated correspondence, reports and business files dating 1915-1983 relating to the Department.
