Biographical sketch: Craig Stewart was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, and lived most of his life in central Manitoba. In 1951, he and his family moved to Minnedosa, Manitoba, where he established himself in the automobile and farm implement sales business. He served as president of the Minnedosa Chamber of Commerce and was on the town council from 1966 to 1968. In 1968, he ran for election as the Progressive Conservative candidate for his riding. He won that election and again in 1972 and 1974. Stewart retired from politics in 1979.
Custodial history: The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by Craig Stewart in 1979.
Scope and content: The fonds consists entirely of the office files Craig Stewart created while a Member of Parliament. Included are correspondence, reports, questionnaires, surveys, speeches, and related materials. The fonds is strong in constituency letters with comments from rural Manitoba residents on a large variety of subjects. Agricultural matters generate the most correspondence although debatable issues concerning Riding Mountain National Park and Camp Shilo are also fairly well documented.
