Biographical sketch: Vladimir Simosko was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1943. Simosko earned an M.L.S. and was formerly the curator of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University. He has taught jazz history courses since 1968 and is a musician. Simosko has published many articles and books including Eric Dolphy: A Musical Biography and Discography (1974), Serge Chaloff: A Musical Biography and Discography (1998), and Artie Shaw: A Musical Biography and Discography (2000). He is the former Head of the Music Library at the University of Manitoba.
Barry Tepperman completed a B.Sc. (1971) and a Ph.D. in Medicine (1975) at the University of Toronto. After completing the book on Eric Dolphy with Simosko, Tepperman concentrated on medicine. He earned a diploma in Therapeutic Radiology from the American Board of Radiology in 1981. In 1981, he became a Fellow, Radio Oncology, of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Tepperman earned another diploma from the America Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians in 1990. In 1994, he became a Fellow at the American College of Radiology. He completed a Masters of Business Administration, Health Administration at the University of Miami in 1995.
Custodial history: Vladimir Simosko of the University of Manitoba's Science Library donated the fonds to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections in 1979.
Scope and content: The fonds consists of three progressive copies of Eric Dolphy: A Musical Biography and Career Analysis with an Annotated Catalogue of Recordings, both by Vladimir Simosko and Barry Tepperman. The fonds consists of the first draft (June 1971), the first copyright edition (October 1971) and the third version of the submission draft without the discography (September 1972).
