Administrative history: The first annual membership meeting of the Society for Socialist Studies was held in April 1981. The Society's mandate is to facilitate and encourage research and analysis in Canada with emphasis on socialist, feminist, ecological, and anti-racist points of view. Made up of an association of progressive academics, students, activists, and members of the general public, the Society is dedicated to providing a forum for those who promote a socialist perspective as a foundation on which to build solutions to political, economic, workplace, social, gender, ethnic, environmental, and other forms of injustice. It attempts to bring together individuals from all backgrounds as a member of the Canadian Federation for Humanities and Social Sciences. Member-organized sessions have dealt with topics ranging from neo-liberalism, feminism, race and ethnicity, terrorism, genocide, anarchism, and the environment, to economic, social and political injustice, concerns with the future of work, and the family. For the majority of the Society’s existence, its head office was located at University College, University of Manitoba and presided over by Department of Economics professor, Dr. Jesajah Vorst. The Society’s primary publication, the Socialist Studies Bulletin, began in the early 1980s and lasted until 2005. In 2005, the Bulletin changed formats and became Socialist Studies: The Journal of the Society for Socialist Studies which is a peer-reviewed and interdisciplinary periodical.
Custodial history: The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives and Special Collections in 2005 and 2008 by Dr. Jesajah Israel Vorst.
Scope and content: The fonds contains textual records relating to the organizational functions of the Society for Socialist Studies. In addition, the fonds contains duplicates of the Socialist Studies Bulletin, currently held in the University of Manitoba Library’s general collection, varying in dates from 1986 to 2005.
