In 1970, ownership of the library was transferred to the Canadian Geriatric Research Society (CGRS) located in Toronto, which provided continued support for the ongoing growth of this valuable collection in geriatrics and gerontology. When the CGRS began winding down its operation in 1990, an appropriate home for this library was sought. After a review of numerous proposals from libraries across the country, Winnipeg's Deer Lodge Centre (DLC) was selected as the recipient of these resources. DLC already had a well established institutional library and, with a generous grant from the Winnipeg Foundation, was providing services and resources to nursing homes and health care workers across Manitoba. It was DLC's broad provincial focus that was decisive for bringing the Crane collection to Winnipeg in May 1990.

The Crane Library became well known in Winnipeg, in Manitoba and throughout the country, as a national leader in geriatric research and programming. As part of a collaborative effort to coordinate and improve the provision of knowledge-based information services in the province, the Crane Library joined the Health Sciences Libraries of the University of Manitoba in September 2005, along with the libraries of Misericordia and Riverview Health Centres.

The Library is located on the 1st floor of the Administration Building of the Deer Lodge Centre at 2109 Portage Avenue. As a branch of the University of Manitoba's Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library, the Library supports the research and patient care activities of the staff of Deer Lodge Centre, Riverview Health Centre, Winnipeg's 39 personal care homes, and the WRHA Long Term Care program. The Library is also available for use by University of Manitoba faculty, staff, and students. Patients, families, and the general public are also welcome to visit the Library.

The J.W. Crane Memorial Library provides special current awareness information in aging, geriatrics, and long-term care. Agelit is published quarterly as an information alerting service for long term care providers, and others interested in geriatrics, gerontology or long-term care. This select bibliography of articles, books, websites, and audiovisual resources in geriatrics, gerolontology and long term care is distributed automatically to staff of Deer Lodge Centre, Riverview Health Centre, Winnipeg Personal Care Homes and the WRHA Long-Term Care program.

The Current Perspectives Series is updated several times a year and highlights current articles, books and Internet resources on specific topics of interest to long-term care professionals.
