Biographical sketch: Sir George Otto Trevelyan (b. 1838 - d. 1928), 2nd Bt. was a British historian and politician. He served as a Whig member of the House of Commons from 1865 to 1879. He was the Secretary for Ireland (1882-1884) and Scotland (1886 and 1892-1895). He was critical of George III and interested in American Revolutionary leaders. As a historian and author, he wrote several books, one of which was a biography of his uncle entitled The Life and Letters of Lord Macauly (1908). This book resulted in his well known four-volume, American Revolution (1899-1907).
Scope and content: The fonds consists of a one page handwritten letter to Mr. Steinthal London, dated February 3, 1877. The letter discusses literature, Trevelyan's reading interests, and includes comments on the contemporary British political scene.
