Biographical Sketch: John Hirsch was born in Hungary in 1930.  He came to Canada in 1947 through the War Orphans Project of the Canadian Jewish Congress.  He was adopted by the Shack Family of Winnipeg.  In 1952, he graduated with a BA in English literature from the University of Manitoba.  Hirsch co-founded Theatre 77, which would later become the Manitoba Theatre Centre.  He became one of Canada’s prominent theatre directors.  He died in Toronto on August 1, 1989.

Custodial history: The fonds was extracted from material donated by Sybil Shack in 2004

Scope and content: The fonds consist of correspondence to Hirsch, artwork, tapes, and various textual material relating to his personal life and career.
