The relationship between the University of Manitoba and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem extends over eighty-one years. The collection consists of photographs depicting the gala opening ceremony of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem on April 1, 1925, and visits within the nearby region by Dr. Guthrie Perry, an official representative of the University of Manitoba. The ceremony took place on Mt. Scopus in Jerusalem in a natural amphitheatre on the side of a mountain with a breathtaking view of the territory leading to the Dead Sea.

Also in attendance were political and academic figures from many nations, including Dr. Chaim Weizmann, Chair of the Hebrew University’s Board of Governors, who was later to become the first President of the State of Israel on its emergence in 1948. Others present included Lord Arthur James Balfour, British Foreign Secretary, Viscount Allenby and Sir Herbert Samuel. The University’s first Chancellor was Dr. Judah Magnes.

Dr. Perry was head of the Department of Classics at the University of Manitoba who later became a minister and professor of Oriental languages and literature at United College. He accompanied Max Steinkopf, a prominent Winnipeg lawyer and business executive.

The photographs comprising the collection were taken on the occasion of the gala opening and visits within the nearby region, and were provided by Max Steinkopf’s grandchildren via the Winnipeg Chapter of the Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University. In 2006, Harold Buchwald, on behalf of the Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University, Winnipeg Chapter, presented Dr. Emöke Szathmáry, President of the University of Manitoba, with the photo album.
