How do I request items be sent to a hold locker?

1. Use Library Search to find items in our collections.

2. Once you have the search results, make sure you sign in iconSign in to get complete results and to request items.

3. Click on the title of the desired item.

4. Scroll down to Get it.

5. Click Request.

NOTE: Use the Request from another library option only when the item is not available at UM Libraries.

6. Elizabeth Dafoe Library Hold Locker and Neil John Maclean Library will appear under Pickup Location.  Choose one and click Send Request.

  1. You will receive an email notification when your item(s) are ready for pickup. The email will contain pickup instructions. You can also view Instructions and FAQ about picking up your items. 


  • Access to the Hold Lockers is dependent upon building hours, building capacity, and swipe access (Bannatyne Campus). See access details for hold lockers.
  • We are experiencing delays due to a high volume of requests.
  • Be advised, physical materials are quarantined for 7 days after being returned.
  • We are unable to provide hold locker pickup for alumni at this time. 

Where are the hold lockers located?

  • Elizabeth Dafoe Library entrance foyer, 25 Chancellors Circle.
    • Available 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM, Monday to Friday only.
    • This location is for faculty, staff, and students on the Fort Garry campus.
  • Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library (outside library entrance), 2nd floor, 727 McDermot Avenue.
    • Available 5:30 AM to 5:30 PM, subject to building capacity and swipe card accessibility.
    • This location is for faculty, staff, and students on the Bannatyne campus.
  • Education Building, 3rd Floor (across from Room 334) -- unavailable at this time.


Can I place a request for any hold locker?

  • The Elizabeth Dafoe Library hold locker is for Fort Garry campus students, faculty and staff.
  • The Neil John Maclean Library hold locker is for Bannatyne campus students, faculty and staff only.
  • At this time, the Education Building locker is unavailable.


How long after a request is made before an item is available to be picked up?

  • We are experiencing delays due to a high volume of requests.
  • You will receive an email notification when the requested item(s) are ready for pickup.
  • You will have 3 business days to pick up your items.


What if I need an accessible compartment?

You can use the Notes field in the hold request to indicate that you need an accessible locker. Please email to request any additional accommodations. 


What if I request too many items for the locker, or the items are too big to fit?

Currently, the maximum number of hold requests is limited to 10. 

Clients can only have one locker assigned to them at a time. If there are too many items to fit into a locker, we will fill the locker to maximum capacity and the remainder of the materials will be assigned to you after you empty the first locker. If items are too big to fit into a locker, your request will be cancelled at this time and you will be notified of alternatives.


Where do I return hold locker material?

You may return your hold items to one of the following locations:

  • Return slot at Elizabeth Dafoe Library
  • Return bin at the back of the Dafoe library in the loading dock area
  • Return slot at Sciences & Technology Library
  • Return bin outside Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library


Will document delivery items be placed in the hold lockers?
