Alternative metrics typically focus at the article level and are often referred to as altmetrics.  Alternative metrics is a term used to describe metrics measuring citation counts and usage statistics (views and downloads) in alternative research outputs such as social media, datasets, conference posters, theses, etc. - NISO Alternative Metrics Initiative Phase 1 White Paper

Reasons to track your alternative metrics

Many researchers have decided to track their alternative metrics, below are a few reasons why you should as well:

  • tracks citations for non-traditional outputs that are not indexed by databases
  • tracks online attention to your research
  • can provide you an idea of how important your research is to society
