Librarian Philosophy

Justin's librarian philosophy is rooted in relational practices and building communities and connections, doing meaningful work by modelling collegial and hard-working practices, a commitment to lifelong learning, and supporting others in the field of librarianship and beyond.

Biography

Justin is an Assistant Librarian in the Sciences Division. He is the liaison librarian for Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy, and Medical Physics. He graduated with his MLIS from the University of Alberta in 2019. Previously he graduated with his Library & Information Technology diploma in 2013 from Red River College.

His research interests include relational practices and building community in academic libraries, researcher profiles and persistent identifiers at the University of Manitoba, in addition to a new project exploring authorship and contributorship in research.

  • Choose the best databases for your research.
  • Help you to understand citation and reference styles.
  • Answer any questions about using the library to finish an assignment.
  • Set up notifications for staying up-to-date on current research.
  • Help you deposit your thesis or dissertation in MSpace, our institutional repository.

  • Help you to set up an academic researcher profile (e.g. ORCID, Scopus, Web of Science).
  • Guide you to an appropriate journal to publish in, open access or otherwise.
  • Help you to deposit your scholarly work in MSpace, our institutional repository.
  • Instruct your class on library services and information literacy, such as searching for and evaluating scientific literature.
  • Answer any questions you have about systematic or scoping reviews.
  • Speak with your students about an assignment.
  • Create library content in UMLearn for your class.
  • Set up notifications for staying up-to-date on current research.
  • Consider book or resource purchase suggestions.
  • Help make your academic work open, such as using the Open Science Framework.
  • Interpret journal author agreements.
  • Answer any questions you have about library services.
