October 31 is Halloween. It is traditionally the time when psychic faculties are at their height. Precognition, second sight, clairvoyance, and other psychic powers, reach out to stem the gulf which separates this earth from the immaterial world.

Back in the material world, those interested in such paranormal phenomena can now learn more online. Just in time for Halloween, Psychic News – the world’s longest running spiritualist publication – is now hosted on UM Digital Collections. It adds to nearly forty other historical news publications currently available on the site, including The Winnipeg Tribune. The new digital collection further contributes to others on the site related to psychical and paranormal activities, such as the Hamilton Family fonds, which features records of Dr. Thomas Glendenning Hamilton, a local spiritualist who hosted a number of séances in his Elmwood home attended by other well-known spiritualists such as William Lyon Mackenzie King and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In fact, many of Dr. Hamilton's experiences are featured in the issues of Psychic News now featured online.
The new digital collection includes the earliest issues, from 1932 to 1967, with later issues to be added in coming years. So, whether you are interested in learning more about local paranormal encounters such as Dr. Hamilton’s ghostly meeting with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Psychic News, January 16, 1943), or you are curious about “Uncle Bob's troubles” putting “his ectoplasm on like overalls!” (Psychic News, January 28, 1933), levitate on over to Psychic News on UM Digital Collections and check out what we've conjured up!
Over the course of this project, many staff members at the University of Manitoba Libraries were involved in the planning, testing, ingest of metadata and files, quality checking, project coordination, and launch of the collection. The University of Manitoba Libraries would like to thank many of the staff in the Libraries who helped to launch this collection:
