How to Access Files and Applications Remotely

Junos Pulse / Pulse Secure (aka VPN)

In order to work from home you will need to install the University’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) software called Pulse Secure on your home computer. VPN software allows you to access resources that are normally only accessible from on campus. Click below for instructions to install the Pulse Secure VPN. If you require additional assistance contact IST.

Remote Desktop Connection

For those using a Windows PC at work, you may be able to access your work computer from home using the Remote Desktop Program (RDP). RDP allows you to connect to your work PC from anywhere as if you were physically there and access your network drives such as your home H:\ and shared S:\ drives. It will also ensure you have access to any files that might be on your work computer directly and will ensure that you have access to any of the applications that are installed and needed for you to do your work.

  • Remote Desktop will only work if you have already set up the Pulse Secure VPN beforehand.
  • In order for this to work you will need to have your work computer setup to receive remote desktop connections. If you haven’t done this yet, you’ll need to contact IST and request that this be setup by sending your request to servicedesk@umanitoba.ca
  • Additionally, remote desktop will only work if your computer at work is on. If it is shut off you will need someone on campus to turn it on for you.

Some applications or websites may be available without using RDP or the VPN. If you find you cannot connect to an application or website, first try using the VPN and failing that use RDP to access those resources as you would if you were physically at work.
