Prestigious & Predatory Open Access Publishing

Jeffrey Beall, author of the popular blog Scholarly Open Access, will present an overview of the issues related to scholarly open-access publishing with a focus on the unintended consequences such as predatory publishers and their abuse of the gold open access model.

Altmetrics for Scholarly Publishing

Heather Piwowar is a co-founder of the altmetrics vendor ImpactStory and a leading researcher in the area of research data availability and data reuse. Heather will present an overview of ImpactStory and other open-source, Web-based tools that help researchers explore and share the diverse impacts of all their research products—from traditional ones like journal articles, to emerging products like blog posts, datasets and software.

Stian Håklev is a PhD student at the University of Toronto. He was one of the co-founders of Peer2Peer University, a pioneer platform for experimentation with peer-based learning. This exciting presentation will focus on what it means to be an open scholar/researcher. Stian will discuss his experience using the wealth of OA journals and other resources in his research.

What is Open Access Week?

Open Access Week 2013, now in its 6th year, is a global event that promotes open access as a new norm in scholarship and research.This year's theme is "Open Access: Redefining Impact" and a diverse range of events will be held around the world between October 21 and 27.
