The IMF is making some changes to the International Financial Statistics (IFS) dataset. Over the last number of months, the IMF Statistics Department has conducted a review of the IFS National Accounts (SNA) series. The evaluation concluded that the IFS contains various series that require updates or whose coverage has deteriorated to a point that inclusion is no longer appropriate. The evaluation also noted several cases where the labeling of existing series requires updating to align with current international best practices and conventions.

There are currently 177 national accounts series included in the IFS. Of the 177 series currently included in the IFS, 53 series will be retained, 124 series are being discontinued and 93 will be added. Following this update 146 series will be published. In addition, series will now be supported by enhanced metadata.

These updates are being made to improve the overall quality, accessibility, and clarity of national accounts series on the IFS. The changes will be implemented on June 12, 2021, between the May 2021 and June 2021 publications of the IFS dataset. A detailed description of the changes and a worksheet of affected series can be found in What’s New on the IFS Site in IMF Data.

If you have any questions regarding these changes please contact SIMSRES@imf.org.
