Getting started at the University of Manitoba Libraries

How do I Access Resources at the Library?

To access online material through the library

1. Go the Libraries homepage.

2. In the search bar, type the title of the item you want to access, or type in your topic if you don't already know.

3. Conduct your search. Decide which material you'd like to access.

4. Click on the  Full Text Available symbol to discover if you have access to the material online. Click on a blue "Full text available" link to access the full text.

5. If you are not already logged in to your account, you will be asked to do so. Use your UMNetID and password.

To pick up an item at the Library

1. Locate the book through the search bar on the Libraries homepage.
Tip: On the search results page, select "Held by library" in the "Availability" filter for easier book searches.

2. Once you have found the item, check:

  • Is it 'Available'?
  • What is the location?
  • What is the call number?
  • Click Map It Map it button What is the shelf number? Where is the shelf within the library?

Tip: if it's not available, sign in to your account with your UMNetID and use the Request button to request that it be recalled from its current borrower within a week.

3. Use the shelf number and call number to find the item on the shelf.

Search for Course Reserves

To find material your prof has placed on "Reserve"

1. Go to the Libraries homepage.

2. Click Course Reserves button under the search box.

3. Enter your instructor's name or course number.

4. Find the item you want.

5. Write down the call number and location.

6. Go to the Course Reserves section in that library and find the book using the call number. Ask for directions at the front desk if you need to!

7. Sign out the book!
