Call Number: Ua 6 (A.79-04, A.83-32, A.08-49)
Title: Senate fonds.
Dates: 1936-2005.
Extent: 11.78 m of textual records.
Administrative history: In 1909, the Royal Commission on University Government recommended that the University Council be decreased in size and assume the sole duty of academic regulation. The adoption of those recommendations laid the foundation for the creation of the University Senate. However, it was not until 1936, when the Royal Commission on the Impairment of University of Manitoba Endowment Funds recommended that the University Council be dissolved and be replaced with a more representative body, that the Senate was established. The University of Manitoba Act of 1968 added seven student representatives to Senate, and granted to Senate the power to elect members to the Board of Governors. In 1970, 22 student representatives (without voting rights) were added to Senate. The Board of Governors and Senate, who had been long separated, were now integrated on administrative and academic matters.
Custodial history: The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by the Senate in several accessions, beginning in 1979.
Scope and content: The fonds includes the minutes of Senate, handbooks of briefs and proposals, correspondence, and reports by Senate committees. Senate records deal with every aspect of academic, faculty, and college matters, including course curriculum proposals, buildings and facilities, budgets, student enrolment, grants and awards, and academic tenure.
Restrictions: Confidential material is restricted.
Finding aid: A printed finding aid is available in the Archives reading room.
