Manitoba Geographical Society fonds

Call Number: Mss Sc 60, Mss Sc 115 (A.80-01, A.90-44)

Title: Manitoba Geographical Society fonds.

Dates: 1951-1974.

Extent: 0.15 m of textual records.

Administrative history: The Manitoba Geographical Society was established October 8, 1951, at a meeting held at 34 Amherst Street, Winnipeg. Dr. Thomas R. Weir and Dean Scarfe (Geography, University of Manitoba) were elected President and Chairman, respectively. The society's purpose was to stimulate "an interest in exploration and travel and in the spread of geographical knowledge". The society membership was open to anyone with an interest in geography but consisted primarily of University of Manitoba (and later University of Winnipeg) geography professors and students. The society ceased to operate after 1974.

Custodial history: The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections in January 1979 by professor T. R. Weir. Additional records of the Manitoba Geographical Society were stored as UA 27 (Box 258, Folder 1 and Box 267, Folder 1). These records consist of notices of meetings and minutes of the society from 1954 to 1969 and 1968 to 1971, respectively. UA 27 (258-001) and UA 27 (267-001) were removed from UA 27 and added to MSS SC 60 in March 2002 to reflect their provenance. An additional 8 cm of records were originally filed as MSS SC 115. These were added to MSS SC 60 in March 2002 to reflect their provenance but are still physically stored as MSS SC 115.

Scope and content: The fonds consists of a single bound book, which served as notices of meetings, minutes, and a scrapbook for the Manitoba Geographical Society from its founding in 1951 until 1974. 258-001 consists of notices of meetings and minutes of the Manitoba Geographical Society from 1954 to 1969. 267-001 consists of notices of meetings and minutes of the Manitoba Geographical Society from 1954 to 1969. The records stored as MSS SC 115 consist of reports of the society, maps, correspondence, field trip itineraries, pamphlets and membership lists.
