Biographical sketch: Paul Stelmaschuk was born in Spedden, Alberta to Joseph and Sophia Stelmaschuk in 1912.  Through his adolescent involvement in the 4H Club, Stelmaschuk won a trip to the Olds School of Agriculture, where he won a scholarship to attend university.  Following the completion of the program at Olds, he entered the University of Alberta in 1947 where, in 1951, he received a B.Sc. in Agriculture, majoring in Agronomy.  Following graduation, Stelmaschuk taught agricultural practices to American veterans in North Dakota, eventually leading to the establishment of the Vocation Agricultural School in Flasher, N.D.  He worked here for five years while studying for a Master's degree at the University of North Dakota.  He then taught extension work at the University of Minnesota while completeing his Master's degree in Secondary School administration at U.N.D.  He was then promoted to Assistant Professor by the University of Minnesota.  In 1962, Stelmaschuk was appointed Rural Development Specialist on the University of Minnesota campus and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1964.  In 1967, Stelmaschuk returned to Alberta to become a Rural Development Specialist for the provincial government. He was offered the position of Director of the University of Manitoba's School of Agriculture in 1972 and served in this position until his retirement to Kelowna, British Columbia in 1986.  While Director, Stelmaschuk worked with the Canadian International Development Agency, touring Australian agricultural schools in 1988 and providing advice.  He also served as Canadian Director of the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture.  Following his retirement, he and his wife, Anna, became very involved in Ukrainian organizations and associations.  He has four children from a previous marriage and is step-father to his wife's two children.

Custodial history: The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by the Faculty of Agriculture in 1991.

Scope and content: The fonds consists of Paul Stelmaschuk's unpublished study and review of agricultural education at every agricultural college in Canada titled "Post High School, Non-Degree Agricultural Education in Canada".
