Biographical sketch: Odon L. Ostrowski lived in Poland and Germany during the Second World War. Ostrowski laboured under the Nazi-occupied Poland until the country was occupied by the Soviet army in 1945. He lived under the Communist regime in eastern Germany until 1946 when, following the death of his step-father, he and his mother escaped into West Germany where he entered a high school that was established and administered by officers of the Polish army. He immigrated to Canada in 1948 and worked as a labourer on a farm near Lockport, Manitoba. He later worked in construction, on the Canadian National Railway, in the forestry industry, and in other varied occupations. He later resided in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He and his wife, Odile, had seven children.
Custodial history: The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by Odon L. Ostrowski in 1991 and 1993.
Scope and content: The fonds consists of two unpublished novels by Odon L. Ostrowski titled From Berlin to Winnipeg and The Holocaust in Poland: A Novel. The latter manuscript is a description of life during World War II in occupied Poland and in Nazi concentration camps as seen through the eyes of the writer who was, at the time, a Polish forced labourer.
