Extent: 1.38 m of textual records. -- 117 photographs.

Biographical sketch: Lyall Powers was born July 13, 1924 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force and Canadian Army from 1944 to 1945. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba in 1948. He attended the Sorbonne from 1948 to 1950. The following year he received an M.A. in English from the University of Manitoba. He returned to Paris in 1953 to 1954 to study as the recipient of a Royal Society of Canada Fellowship. In 1955, Powers received a Ph.D. from the University of Indiana. He spent two years at the University of Wisconsin before joining the University of Michigan, in 1958, where he continues to teach.

Powers has written extensively on Henry James and Leon Edel. Most recently, Powers has turned his attention to his classmate, Margaret Laurence. In 2003, he published Alien Heart: The Life & Work of Margaret Laurence with the University of Manitoba Press.

Custodial history: The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by Lyall Powers in two separate accessions in 2004 and 2005.

Scope and content: The fonds is separated into five series. They include biographical information, research material, correspondence, drafts of his book on Margaret Laurence, and a photograph collection (PC 202).  The photograph collection consists of 72 photographs, 10 negatives, and 35 photographs (electronic).

Restrictions: Some correspondence has been restricted. These files will be designated confidential.
