Biographical sketch: Rudolph Presber was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany on July 4, 1868. He earned a doctorate at Heidelberg and was long connected with the newspaper world and was editor of the Frankfurte Generalanzeiger and the Berlin Post. Presber was the author of a large number of short stories, sketches, novels, and several volumes of verse. Perhaps his best-known work wasGeschichten um Bubchen, a humorous collection of short stories intended for non-German students of the language. Presber's son, A.A.W. Presber emigrated to Canada and worked for the Canada Grain Council and produced a research paper entitled An enquiry into the origins, cultivation and utilization of the small faba bean (horsebean) in Austria, the Federal Republic of Germany and England. Rudolph Presber's grandson, Julian Presber, graduated form the University of Manitoba in 1980 with a B.Comm. in 1980 and now resides in the Duchy of Luxembourg.
Custodial history: The fonds was donated by Julian Presber to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections via Rare Book Librarian Gaby Divay in 1996.
Scope and content: The fonds consists of a print-out of the University of Manitoba Libraries description of the fonds, copies of the cover pages of four of Rudolph Presber's books, the English language preface to Rudolph Presber's Geschichten um Bubchen, a German language bibliography of his works, a short biography pamphlet of Rudolf Presber believed written in 1928, a copy of the University of Manitoba libraries holdings of the Presber family, and a printout of an electronic mail message between Julian Presber and Gaby Divay.
