Biographical sketch: William P. Thompson was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey on October 11, 1942. He graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1965. He obtained an M.A. in Architectural History from Cornell University in 1967. Ten years late,r he received a Ph.D. in Architecture and Urban Planning from Cornell. Thompson taught at the University of Kansas as an Assistant Professor from 1967 to 1969. In the fall of 1969, he joined the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba, where he taught for 33 years. In 1975, he wrote Winnipeg Architecture 100 Years, that was published by Queenston House of Winnipeg. In 1992, he was the recipient of a Canada 125 medal. In 1996, he won the the University of Manitoba Outreach Award for outstanding achievements in neighborhood conservation. Thompson died December 24, 2006.
Custodial history: The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by Evelyn McFarland in 2007.
Scope and content: The fonds consists of 23 series. They include: biographical information, academic research, Ph.D. dissertation, articles and lectures, conferences, Guide to Manitoba Architecture drafts, University of Manitoba material, course outlines, legacy project, Lake of the Woods camp research, miscellaneous research, revitalizing old homes course, heritage and historic buildings, heritage projects, Thompson's restoration projects, Manitoba Historical Society, correspondence, student essays, oversize material, photograph collection, and tape collection. The photograph collection is comprised of 1589 photos, 623 negatives, 218 slides, 20 contact sheets, and 64 videocassettes. The tape collection is comprised of 43 audio-cassettes and 2 reel to reel tapes.
