Biographical sketch: Herbert S. Weil, Jr. was born January 3, 1933 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended Yale University in 1950-1951 before obtaining a B.A. from Tulane University of Louisiana in 1954. The following year, he did graduate studies (on a Fulbright Fellowship) at the University of Paris and the University of Lille. Weil received an M.A. (1961) and a Ph.D. in English and Humanities (1964) from Stanford University. In 1961, he married Judith Richardson. Dr. Weil taught English at the University of Connecticut from 1962 to 1978. Dr. Weil and his wife joined the University of Manitoba in 1978. He became a Full Professor and Head of the English Department in 1979. Both Herbert and Judith Weil were named Senior Scholars upon their retirements in 2002. He is now Professor Emeritus at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Weil has published extensively with articles on Shakespeare's plays, Sophocles' modern drama, Alice Munro, and Carol Shields. He is the author of Reading Writing and Rewriting (Lippincott, 1964), Discussions of Shakespeare's Romantic Comedy (Heath, 1966), and the Cambridge Edition of Henry IV Part One (1997).
Custodial history: The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by Herbert Weil in 2003.
Scope and content: The fonds consists of academic correspondence during Dr. Weil's teaching career at the University of Manitoba. It also contains articles and drafts of the book King Henry IV Part One.
