LIBRARY SUPPORT FOR RESEARCHERS
REPOSITORY SERVICES
The Tri-Agency Statement of Principles on Data Management (2016) states several expectations including the collection and storage, preservation, retention and sharing of data. Under the responsibilities for research institutions for meeting these expectations is "delivering, or supporting access to, repositories or other platforms that securely preserve, curate and provide access to research data".
University of Manitoba Libraries' Research Services and Digital Strategies supports two institutional repositories (IRs): MSpace and UM Dataverse.
The intent of an IR is a digital collection of an organizational's intellectual output, centralizing, preserving, and making accessible the knowledge generated by academic institutions benefiting both the institution and its scholars. Depositing in an IR raises the institutional profile while also bringing broader dissemination, increased use, and enhanced professional visibility of scholarly research.
UM Dataverse
UM Dataverse is a secure, collaborative environment for data deposit and access. Its platform supports datasets, metadata and digital objects of all common formats. Deposit provides DOIs for scholarly data citations and discovery, and meets data requirements from publishers and funders.

MSpace
MSpace is a repository space that supports deposit from many University of Manitoba communities: CEOS; Engineering datasets and theses deposit; FGS theses deposit; the Faculty of Health Sciences; and deposit of research publications for UM researchers. MSpace is an open access option that meets self-archiving criteria as identified by the Tri-Agency. Deposit provides a permanent url (aka handle) for scholarly data citations and discovery. If you require a DOI for your deposit in this repository, see Repository Assistance.
The World of Repositories
There are many kinds of repositories: data and non-specific, national and international, multidisciplinary and discipline-specific. The following is a list of the primary and/or most commonly recognized repositories.
DIRECTORIES/ REGISTRIES/ LISTS
Canadian Institutional Repositories - A list maintained by the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL)
Directories of Research Data Repositories (re3data.org) - an easy identification of research data repositories, for both producers and users
OpenDOAR (Directory of Open Access Repositories) - directory of academic open access repositories, validated by OpenDOAR staff
DATA
Federated Research Data Repository - National, Canadian data deposit; data deposited in UM Dataverse can also be found here
Dryad - a non-profit, international data repository supporting scientific and medical publications; most data files are associated with peer-reviewed articles or dissertations
MULTIDISCIPLINARY/ FORMAT-AGNOSTIC
figshare - a product of Digital Science, supports all research outputs including videos, datasets; unlimited public storage and 1 GB of private storage free
zenodo - a project supported by CERN, OpenAIRE, and Horizon 2020, it offers researchers, scientists, EU projects and institutions a space to share and showcase multidisciplinary research results (data and publications) that are not otherwise part of existing institutional or subject-based repositories
DISCIPLINE-SPECIFIC/ SUBJECT (Selected)
ICPSR (Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research) - University of Manitoba Libraries supports this consortium so UM faculty and students can create accounts, and both deposit and access data in this resource.
