Advanced Search

The advanced search allows you to mix various search elements to create a focused or specialized search of all U of M Libraries' materials.

The Search for buttons allow you to select one of:

  • Search All: all resources U of M Libraries owns or licenses, including physical books, scholarly articles online, e-books, subject guides, and more.
  • Inside the Libraries: physical U of M Libraries resources (eg. books, entire issues or volumes of journals, audiovisual material). 
  • Course Reserves: any U of M Libraries resource that is designated as course reserve. These are materials that are used for currently taught courses and are available at individual libraries' front desks. 
  • Subject Guides: search U of M Libraries subject guides.


The Any field drop down box allow you to search for words in Title, Author, Subject, ISBN or ISSN.

Combine lines of your search with Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) to include or exclude keywords or phrases. 

You can also focus your search by limiting your search to only include:

  • Material Type: choose from articles, audio visual, books, images, journals, and scores.
  • Language: choose from materials in English, French, or German.
  • Start and End Date (Publication Date): choose different date ranges, such as in the past year or custom dates.


Example: Search for books written in English with "history" in the title, and "Manitoba" in the subject description.
