Biographical sketch: Leonard Hilary Shebeski was born in Aubigny, Manitoba in 1914. He attended the University of Manitoba where he received a B.Sc. in Agriculture in 1941 and an M.Sc. in 1946. He did further graduate work at the University of Minnesota before joining the Field Husbandry department of the University of Saskatchewan with the rank of assistant professor. He returned to Manitoba in 1953 as Head of the Plant Science department. In 1965, he was named Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Home Economics, a post he held until his retirement in 1979. Probably best known for his work with triticale, a grain hybrid, he began his research while in the Department of Plant Science. In 1957, he became a member of the National Research Council and was also a member of the Science Council of Canada from 1966 to 1970. Shebeski won world-wide recognition for his achievements, including his appointment as a foreign member of the Soviet Union Academy of Agricultural Science in 1967. In 1972, he was awarded an honourary doctorate by the Agricultural University of Warsaw.

Custodial history: The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by Leonard Shebeski in 1988.

Scope and content: The fonds contains material dating from 1946 to 1988. Included are such items as minutes of various committees, correspondence, research proposals, annual reports, and research reports. His work as Dean is best documented in the records of the Faculty of Agriculture.
