Biographical sketch: Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Sol Sinclair received B.S.A. and M.Sc. degrees from the University of Saskatchewan and a Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba. Before becoming a professor, he worked as an agricultural representative, a farm manager, and a civil servant and was instrumental in formulating various prairie farm assistance programs. In 1953, he was asked to be the first Head of the newly-formed Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Manitoba and held that post for several years. From 1966 to 1968, he was an agricultural advisor to the Kenyan government and, in 1968, was appointed the first Director of the Natural Resources Institute at the University of Manitoba, largely because of his lifelong interest not only in agriculture, but also in the Canadian fishing industry.
Custodial history: The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by the Department of Agricultural Economics in 1989.
Scope and content: The fonds consists of Sol Sinclair's personal and professional papers dating from 1932 to 1986 and include his lecture notes and course outlines on various fields of agricultural economics, his many radio talks and addresses, academic papers (both published and unpublished), various studies and reports, farm account books, his records of the University of Manitoba's Department of Agricultural Economics, and extensive personal correspondence.
