Biographical sketch: Eileen Sykes was raised on a farm in La Vallee, Ontario, but spent most of her adult life in Winnipeg. Her rural childhood is credited as the source of her fantasies of forest animals and the world of nature. Her imagination, when coupled with her literary abilities, led her to publish several short but fairly popular books of children's literature including The Gay Garland (1954) andFanella and the Forest Folk (1978). She has also written short stories and poetry. Eileen Sykes passed away on January 27, 2002 at the age of 94.
Custodial history: The first seven accessions of the fonds were donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by Eileen Sykes between 1984 and 1991. The 2002 accession was donated by Heather Birtles and Arlene Draffin Jones.
Scope and content: The fonds consists of literary manuscripts to her books, poems, tape recordings of her interviews, and some scattered correspondence. Syke's notes of her participation in Dr. T. Glendenning Hamilton's experiments on parapsychology are also included.
