Biographical sketch: John F. Templeton was born March 6, 1936 in Curling (now a part of Corner Brook), Newfoundland. He obtained a B.Sc. (honors) from Memorial University in 1956 and an M.Sc. the following year. He was the first Newfoundland student to complete both degrees majoring in Chemistry. He was awarded a Rothermere Fellowship and studied at Imperial College of Science, Technology & Medicine at the University of London. His supervisor, Professor D.H.R. Barton, later Sir D.H.R. Barton, F.R.S., received the Nobel Laureate in Chemistry in 1969. He received a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of London in 1961 and a D.I.C. from Imperial College. Templeton did post-doctoral work at U.C.L.A. (1961-1962), Brandeis University (1962-1964), and the University of London (1964-1967). He joined the School of Pharmacy at the University of Manitoba in 1967. He was made Full Professor in 1975. Dr. Templeton's research has been directed toward structure-metabolism relationships, steroid enzyme inhibition of potential value in the treatment of hormone dependent cancers, and the cardiotonic structure-activity relationships between plant cardiac glycosides and hormonal steroids, latterly in relation to an endogenous human steroid equivalent . Dr. Templeton gained an international reputation for his research on the organic and medicinal chemistry of steroids and serves on the editorial board of the journal, Steroids. In 2001, he was given a Doctor of Science by the University of London. In 2002, he was made a Professor Emeritius by the Faculty of Pharmacy.
Custodial history: The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by the Faculty of Pharmacy in 2006.
Scope and content: The fonds is divided into 5 series. They include biographical information, articles and papers, course material, research material, and student research notebooks.
Restrictions: Permission must be obtained from the students to copy the student notebooks.
