Artificial Intelligence

Before using AI for your assignments...

Talk with your professor about incorporating AI in your course assignments and papers. Early discussions are key to preventing misunderstandings. Familiarize yourself with AI software and tools to grasp their capabilities and limitations.  It's important to note that AI often produces incomplete and/or incorrect information. It is important to thoroughly vet any information captured through an AI tool.

Research and Content Assistance

If your professor allows it, AI can be used assist you in your writing assignments in different ways:

  • to generate examples of writing for you to model your own writing on. This might include asking AI to prepare a sample of a type of writing,
  • to create a series of questions on a topic or a quiz to prepare for an exam.
  • to explain hard to understand concepts, or rephrase text in different ways so you can better understand the concepts within.
  • to come up with lists of core concepts, that you subsequently research on your own.

We suggest confirming with your instructor on how you can and cannot use AI before using any of these techniques, and to acknowledge when you have used AI in your work and in what ways.

Writing Enhancement and Proofreading

If your professor allows it, AI can be used assist you in your writing assignments in different ways:

  • Grammar and Spelling Correction: AI algorithms analyze the text to identify and correct grammatical errors, punctuation mistakes, and spelling errors. These algorithms are trained on vast amounts of text data to recognize patterns and common errors.

  • Style Improvement: AI systems can suggest improvements to the writing style, such as enhancing clarity, coherence, and readability. This may involve rephrasing sentences, adjusting word choices, and improving sentence structure to make the text more engaging and easier to understand.

  • Vocabulary Enhancement: AI algorithms can suggest synonyms or alternative words to enrich the vocabulary and improve the overall quality of the writing. This helps writers avoid repetitive language and choose more precise and impactful words.

  • Tone and Voice Adjustments: Depending on the desired tone or target audience, AI writing enhancement tools can provide suggestions to adjust the tone, voice, and level of formality in the text. This ensures that the writing aligns with the intended purpose and audience preferences.

  • Consistency Checks: AI systems can identify inconsistencies in terminology, formatting, or style throughout the text and suggest corrections to maintain consistency and coherence.

  • Plagiarism Detection: Some AI writing enhancement tools include plagiarism detection capabilities to check the originality of the content and identify any instances of copied or improperly cited text.

We suggest confirming with your instructor on how you can and cannot use AI before using any of these techniques, and to acknowledge when you have used AI in your work and in what ways.

AI for Translation

If your professor allows it, AI can be used assist you in translating text. Here is how it typically works:

  1. Input Processing: The AI system receives the input text or speech that needs to be translated.

  2. Language Identification: The system identifies the language of the input text or speech.

  3. Text/Speech Analysis: For text inputs, the AI system analyzes the structure, grammar, and context of the input text. For speech inputs, the system converts speech to text using speech recognition algorithms before analyzing it.

  4. Translation Algorithms: The AI system uses advanced machine learning algorithms, often based on neural networks, to translate the input text or speech into the desired target language. These algorithms learn patterns and relationships between words and phrases in different languages from large amounts of bilingual text data.

  5. Contextual Understanding: Modern AI translation systems aim to understand the context of the input text to provide more accurate translations. This includes considering the meaning of words in the context of the entire sentence or paragraph, as well as taking into account idiomatic expressions and cultural nuances.

  6. Output Generation: Based on its analysis, the AI system generates the translated text or speech in the target language.

AI translation can often misinterpret original text, and there are often problems in the translated text which are not necessarily noticeable to non-native speakers of the output language. We suggest confirming with your instructor on how you can and cannot use AI before using any of these techniques, and to acknowledge when you have used AI in your work and in what ways.
