Administrative history: In 1921, the university departments formed faculties in Arts and Science, Engineering, and Architecture.  The Faculty of Arts and Science formed four committees between 1963 annd 1969 including the Faculty Council of Arts and Science, the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science, the Arts Council, and the Science Council.  The Faculty Council of Arts and Science consisted of the deans of the faculties, the Dean of Arts and Science, the President of the University, and all full-time academic staff.  The Faculty Council, with the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science presiding, met to receive reports, to initiate discussion, and to determine general faculty policies.  Although this was the ultimate authority for the Faculty, the Executive Committee or the Deans of the Faculty could also exercise authority on behalf of the Faculty.  Student participation with respect to the council and committees in Arts and Science was approved in principle.  However, since meeting were regarded as closed, they remained unchanged.  The Arts Council was composed of all full-time members of the Arts departments and was chaired by the Dean or the Associate Dean of the Faculty.  In 1970, the Faculty of Arts and Science dissolved and the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Science were subsequently created.

Custodial history: The series was originally designated a separate fonds.  It was added as a series to the Faculty of Arts fonds (UA 27) in March 2002 due to its provenance.  However, it can still be found using its original retrieval number, UA SC 20.

Scope and content: The series consists of the minutes of the Arts Council meeting on April 8, 1969, as well as minutes of the Faculty Council of Arts and Science from April 14 and 28, 1969.  A document describing the decision to include students as voting members on the Faculty Council of Arts and Science is included.  The Interim Report for the information of the Faculty of Arts and Science prepared by the Joint Review Committee, revised April 28, 1969, is also included.  The series also consists of a memorandum titled Library Support for Developing Ph.D. Programs by Professor H.C. Pentland.
