How to search CINAHL

Create a search alert

A search alert is a service which runs your CINAHL search periodically and delivers the results to your email inbox.  This requires you set up a free account in the EBSCO system.

Create a free CINAHL account.

To set an alert:

  1. From CINAHL main search window, click on Sign-In (link; in the yellow bar at the top of the page).
  2. On the EBSCO page, type in your EBSCO login credentials.
  3. Search CINAHL.
  4. Click Search History (link; below the search box).
  5. Click Save Searches / Alerts (link; above the search history).
  6. Type in a name for your search, something meaningful you will remember later.
  7. Type in a description of the search (optional).
  8. Next to Save Search As, make sure that Alert is selected.
  9. Click Save (button).
  10. Select the Frequency you'd like to receive the alert.
  11. Select the "Articles published in the last" for the age of the articles you'd like to receive.
  12. Indicate how long you'd like to receive the alert for.
  13. Indicate the format you'd like to receive the results in:
    1. Brief = citation information
    2. Detailed = citation, abstract information
    3. Bibliographic Manager = will send a file you can import into your citation management software
  14. Add in the email properties for your alert.
