How to search CINAHL

Saving your search history

There are two main reasons why you might want to save your search history.  One, you might want to save your search and run it again at a later date. And two, you might want to capture your search history to share with a professor or a librarian.

Save your search to run again later

You can save your search in CINAHL to run it again at a later date.  This requires you set up a free account in the EBSCO system.

Create a free CINAHL account.

To save your search to run later:

  1. From CINAHL main search window, click on Sign-In (link; in the yellow bar at the top of the page).
  2. On the EBSCO page, type in your EBSCO login credentials.
  3. Search CINAHL.
  4. Click Search History (link; below the search box).
  5. Click Save Searches / Alerts (link; above the search history).
  6. Type in a name for your search, something meaningful you will remember later.
  7. Type in a description of the search (optional).
  8. Next to Save Search As, make sure that Saved Search (permanent) is selected.
  9. Click Save (button).
  10. Click Continue.

Note: if you created your search before signing in, start at step 4.  In step 5, you will be prompted to login with your EBSCO credentials.

To run your saved search:

  1. From CINAHL main search window, click on Sign-In (link; in the yellow bar at the top of the page).
  2. On the EBSCO page, type in your EBSCO login credentials.
  3. Click Folder (icon; in the yellow bar at the top of the page).
  4. Click Saved Searches (link; in the left-hand panel).
  5. Click Retrieved Saved Search (link; under the name of the search you want to run).
  6. In the Actions column of your search history, click Rerun.

Save your search history to share

Sometimes a professor or librarian will want to see how you searched. You can share your search history either as text or an image. Ask the person you are sharing with which is their preference.

To share your search history as text:

  1. From CINAHL main search window, search CINAHL.
  2. Click Search History (link; below the search box).
  3. Select the search history table and copy it.
  4. Paste the search history table into a document or spreadsheet.

To share your search history as an image:

  1. From CINAHL main search window, search CINAHL.
  2. Click Search History (link; below the search box).
  3. Use a screen capture tool to select and copy the search history table.
  4. Paste the image into your document or email.
