How long do systematic reviews take?
Systematic reviews take approximately twelve months, at a minimum. Please see our Timeline for more specific information regarding length of time for a knowledge synthesis.
If you require a shorter timeline, please see our Types of Knowledge Synthesis guide for shorter options, such as rapid reviews. Please note that your research question will determine the type of review that you will complete.
Are systematic reviews the only type of knowledge synthesis review available?
NO! Please see our Types of Knowledge Synthesis guide for a comprehensive overview of the different types of knowledge synthesis.
Are systematic reviews considered the 'gold standard' of reviews?
Systematic reviews and other knowledge synthesis reviews sit atop the well-established evidence-based practice research pyramid. Please be aware that depending on what your research question is answering, the type of review you complete will differ. Please consult our Types of Knowledge Synthesis guide or complete the Right Review questionnaire to find the right review for you and your research team.
Knowledge synthesis aims to summarize existing research to answer a well-defined research question. It is important to bear in mind that to attain a gold standard, you and your research team must follow accepted guidelines and adhere to reporting standards, according to your review type and discipline.

What is a meta-analysis?
A meta-analysis is a common feature of systematic reviews. A systematic review seeks to answer a specific research question by summarizing studies. However, a meta-analysis uses statistical analysis to combine and analyze data from multiple studies. By doing a meta-analysis, you can precisely determine the effectiveness of interventions.

Can I do a systematic review by myself?
NO! It is not possible to complete a systematic review by yourself as you need at least two team members to screen studies to minimize bias.
If you want to complete a comprehensive literature review, we recommend you use the Cornell University worksheet for structured literature reviews for guidance.
Can I complete a systematic review for my thesis or dissertation?
It is not recommended that you complete a systematic review for your thesis. In certain cases, a systematic review is appropriate to complement doctoral work. In these cases, it is imperative to have the support of your supervisor and supervisory committee in all stages of your research. You will require the support of your supervisor to review and screen articles.
What support from University of Manitoba librarians is available to me?
