Title: Alumni Association Inc. of the University of Manitoba fonds.

Dates: 1912-1980, 1990.

Extent: 6.3 m of textual records and other material.

Administrative history: Founded in 1921, the Alumni Association seeks to cultivate loyalty to the University among graduates and former students of the University of Manitoba. In 1926, one year before the University's fiftieth anniversary, the Association created the University of Manitoba Quarterly, a journal of University news and events for alumni. The Alumni Association operated largely as an independent association until 1958 when President Saunderson created the Public Relations and Information Office. The Alumni Association assumed the operative role of the Public Relations and Information Office and received direct funding from the University.

Custodial history: The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections in several accessions, beginning in 1980, by members of the Alumni Association.

Scope and content: The earlier accessions of the fonds include minutes and correspondence of the Board of Directors and Committees, including the Centennial Committee, files on awards, fund raising and advertising activities, correspondence with branches of the Association and other Canadian and American Alumni Associations, annual reports, and miscellaneous correspondence of former Alumni Executive Director, John M. Gordon. Most records date from 1950 to 1975. The A.03-114 accession of the fonds contains 43 photographs of historical figures relating to the University of Manitoba, the Canadian Forestry Convention in Winnipeg, and the official opening of BRIDGE. This accession also contains a newspaper clipping of a cartoon.  In total, the photograph collection (PC 8) includes 237 photographs, 16 negatives, 1 slide, 3 contact sheets, 5 postcards, and 1 sketch.

Restrictions: There are no restrictions on this material.
