OCAP

The First Nations Principles of OCAP
The First Nations principles of OCAP® are a set of standards that establish how First Nations data should be collected, protected, used, or shared. They are the de facto standard for how to conduct research with First Nations.

Standing for ownership, control, access and possession, OCAP® asserts that First Nations have control over data collection processes in their communities, and that they own and control how this information can be used.

Statistics Canada (StatCan) is the federal agency responsible for collecting, compiling, analyzing, abstracting, and publishing statistical information relating to the commercial, industrial, financial, social, economic, and general activities and conditions of the people of Canada.1 The three main types of data collected by StatCan are:

THEMATIC SURVEY DATA: collected via surveys on populations, resources, economy, society, and culture.

ADMINISTRATIVE DATA: collected by government agencies and private-sector companies as part of their day-to-day operations.

CENSUS DATA: collected via the Census of Population (every 5 years). The most recent Census was conducted in 2016.*

Statistical information about the population, age and sex, type of dwelling, families, households and marital status, language, income, immigration and ethnocultural diversity, housing, Aboriginal peoples, education, labour, journey to work, language of work and mobility and migration, as measured in the census program.
