How to search using Ovid

Saving your search history

There are two main reasons why you might want to save your search history.  One, you might want to save your search and run it again at a later date. And two, you might want to capture your search history to share with a professor or a librarian.

Save your search to run again later

You can save your search in Ovid to run it again at a later date.  This requires you set up a free Ovid account.  Note: this only has to be done once and you use the same account for ALL Ovid databases.

To save your search to run again later:

  1. Search an Ovid database.
  2. Once you have finished searching, click Save all (link; below Search History).
  3. When / If prompted, type in the credentials for your Ovid Personal Account, click Sign in (button).
  4. Type in a meaningful Search name to help you find it again later.
  5. The default selection for Type is Permanent, this saves the search permanently until you decide to delete it. Edit if desired.
  6. Add a Comment if needed.
  7. Click Save (button).

To run a saved search:

  1. From the Ovid database search page, click on My Account (link; top center of page).
  2. Type in the credentials for your Ovid Personal Account, click Sign in (button).
  3. Click on My Workspace (link; in blue menu).
  4. Click on My Searches & Alerts (tab; in white bar).
  5. Locate the title of the search you want to run, click in the box next to the search title.
  6. Click Run (link; at top of list).

Save your search history to share

Sometimes a professor or librarian will want to see how you searched. You can share your search history either as a link or as text. Ask the person you are sharing with which is their preference.

To share your search history as text:

  1. From Ovid database search page, search the database.
  2. Click Share Search History (link; below the search box).
  3. Select Copy Search History Details.
  4. Paste the search history into a document or email as desired for sharing.

To share your search history as a link:

  1. From Ovid database search page, search the database.
  2. Click Share Search History (link; below the search box).
  3. Select Copy Search History Link.
  4. Past the search history link into a document or email as desired for sharing.
