How to search using Ovid

Exporting citations

References (citations) can be exported out of Ovid databases for use in citation management software. The best way to do this is to export the citations as a file which can then be imported into different software.

Exporting citations:

  1. Run a search in the database.
  2. Select the citation(s) you want to export.
  3. Click Export (link; top of results).
  4. Select the format = RIS
  5. Select the fields = complete reference
  6. Click Export (button).
  7. Save and name the file to your computer.

Note: the export does NOT include the full-text of the citation.

Export limits

For evidence and knowledge synthesis searches (eg. systematic reviews and scoping reviews) often a large results must be downloaded for screening and data extraction.  Ovid has a limit of 2000 citations at one time. You can save in batches by specifying the range of items to be downloaded. If you are working on a project like this you may want to talk to a librarian.
