How to search Scopus

Gathering citations

As you identify citations that are of interest to your research you can add them to a list in Scopus. A temporary list is a single, session-collected list of documents and is not saved when you exit Scopus.  So remember to export your citations before exiting Scopus.

To add documents to your temporary list:

  1. Search Scopus.
  2. From the results list, click the title of the document you want in your temporary list.
  3. From the document record page, click on Add to list (link; above the title)
  4. You'll see the message, This document was added to your temporary list.

To view your temporary list:

  1. Click Lists at the top of the Scopus page.

What is temporary list?

  • This page shows the temporary list citations created when you select results during a Scopus search.
  • You can work with this list the same way you work with any search results list - output the list, track citations, refine the list, and so on.

Exporting citations

You can export citation(s) using various formats in Scopus. Export formats include:

  • CSV
  • RIS
  • BibTeX
  • Plain text

The most commonly used format is RIS (which is used by Zotero, EndNote and Mendeley).

To export in RIS format:

  1. Search Scopus.
  2. Select the citations(s) you'd like to export by clicking on the box next to each citation or the box next to All at the top of the results list.
  3. Click Export (link; at top of results list)
  4. Select RIS.
  5. Citation information is selected by default, we recommend you also check the box next to Abstract & Keywords (at a minimum).
  6. Click Export (button).
  7. Save the file with a descriptive filename.

Export limits

For evidence and knowledge synthesis searches (eg. systematic reviews and scoping reviews) often a large results must be downloaded for screening and data extraction. You can export up to:

  • 20,000 citations using the Citations only format to a CSV file,
  • 1,000 items to Mendeley,
  • 2,000 items to the other export options. You can save in batches by using temporary list; to make this easier change the number of citations to display on the page to 200 and then use Select this page to add citations to your temporary list.
