Welcome to the University of Manitoba

The library website has a lot of useful information and resources, but it can be overwhelming. This page gathers resources that are particularly useful for you in your first year of study.

Help is available when you have questions. Contact the Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library at 204-789-3342, or email the liaison librarian for Nursing, Christine Neilson.

There are several libraries on campus, and you are free to use any of them that you like - just be sure to check the open hours before you go, because they may vary by library.

Having Trouble With Your Assignment?

Problem #1: You don't completely understand what is required for your assignment

If you do not understand the instructions you have been given for your assignment, you should always ask your instructor for clarification.

Problem #2: You don't have much experience writing at the University level, and are looking for advice on how to improve your writing.

Writing tutors are available at The Academic Learning Centre to give you advice on how to improve your writing. The Centre also offers workshops on how to improve your time management skills, taking good notes and studying effectively, and how to prepare for tests and exams.

Having Trouble with Searching?

Problem #1: You get an error message when you try to access the library's online resources

You need to log in to resources that the university has a subscription for, using your UMNetID. If your UMNet login doesn't work try the following:

  1. Clear the cache and cookies for your browser, shut down your browser, then open it up and try again. Instructions on how to clear your cache and cookies are available online.
  2. If you have accumulated over $20 in fines for overdue or missing items, or if you have not returned items that have been recalled, your account will be blocked until the matter is resolved. Contact the Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library at 204-789-3342 to find out what to do if you think this situation applies to you.
  3. If (1.) above doesn't fix the prblem, and (2.) above does not apply to you, you can ask for help fixing the problem through AskUs, email, or by calling the Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library at 204-789-3342.

Problem #2: You can access the library's online resources, but it isn't working as well as you thought it would

We all need a little help sometimes. Here are a few options for gettting help:

  1. Contact the liaison librarian for Nursing, Christine Neilson to ask a question or make an appoinment
  2. The library offers a variety workshops that students can sign up for, and makes recordings of previous workshops available online
  3. You can also make an appointment to speak with any of the health librarians.
