Artist Statement:
The prompt that led to this piece was to draw one figure from life (center), one figure from a photo (right) and two figures with that photo cut in half and mirrored back together (left and right of the center figure). Since the way my body was positioned in the photo caused the mirrored forms to appear warped to opposite extremes, I decided to use this motif to visually display the tug-of-war between me, my insecurities and, my inner demons. As someone who has struggled with body dysmorphia and eating disorders from a young age, facing myself in the mirror has never been an easy task. This piece attempts to encapsulate the everchanging ways one appears to oneself on a day to day basis and the dialogue that occurs when faced with yourself in a vulnerable space such as the bathroom mirror.
