Formatting Tips

Whole Book Formatting (Print and Electronic)

  • Author: If there is more than one author, list the authors in the same order that they appear on the title page.
  • Date: Use the date shown on the book’s copyright page as the year of publication in the reference, even if the copyright date is different than the release date.
  • Title: The title should be in sentence case and italicized. Make sure to include the subtitle if there is one.
  • Include any edition information in parentheses after the title, without italics.
  • Source: Use the publisher listed for the copy you are citing. Do not include the publisher location.
  • If the book includes a DOI or stable URL, include the them in the reference after the publisher name. Do not follow with a period.
  • If the e-book is from an academic research database and has no DOI or stable URL, end the book reference after the publisher name. Do not include the name of the database in the reference. The reference in this case is the same as for a print book.
