How to cite using APA in the Health Sciences

Citing ChatGPT

If you plan to use AI for an assignment, always clarify with your instructor to ensure that you have permission first!

While the results of an AI program such as ChatGPT or Google Gemini are unfortunately not retrievable by readers, it is still important to credit the author (e.g. the developer of the algorithm) with an in-text citation, as well as a corresponding reference list entry.

If you use AI tools in your research, it is best to describe how you used the tool in the "Method" section of your paper, or somewhere similar. APA recommends that for literature reviews or other types of essays, you might describe how you used the tool in your introduction. Provide the prompt you used and any part of the relevant text that was generated in response.

Example

When prompted with “Is the left brain right brain divide real or a metaphor?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that although the two brain hemispheres are somewhat specialized, “the notation that people can be characterized as ‘left-brained’ or ‘right-brained’ is considered to be an oversimplification and a popular myth” (OpenAI, 2023).
