How to cite using APA in the Health Sciences

In-Text Citations

The APA Publication Manual requires that you cite each reference in your writing using author-date citation style. In-text citations may appear in the body of the paper, including the text, tables, figures, footnotes, or appendices.

  • This means that each reference requires, at the very least, the author name and the date of publication.
  • You can use parenthetical citations: (author, year) or narrative citations: author (year).
  • No matter how many times you cite a source in-text, it only appears in the reference list once.
