How to cite using APA in the Health Sciences

Block Quotation

A block quotation is a type of direct quote. If a direct quote contains forty or more words, it should be off set off in a 'block' by indenting the quote a 1/2-inch from the left margin (5-7 spaces). Do not use quotation marks with block quotes. Include the citation after the end of the block quote, but do not add a period after the citation. Typically, a single phrase with a colon introduces the block quote. To continue the same paragraph, start the next line at the original margin.

Examples

Block Quotation with Narrative Citation

According to Sayavong et al. (2014):

Cultural humility is crucial in healthcare because it fosters respectful and effective patient-provider interactions. By acknowledging their own biases and actively seeking to understand patients' cultural backgrounds, healthcare providers can build trust, improve communication, and tailor care plans that resonate with patients' values and beliefs. This ultimately leads to better health outcomes and reduces disparities experienced by minority groups. (p.59)

Block Quotation with Parenthetical Citation

Research has overwhelmingly demonstrated the benefits of adopting cultural humility in professional practice:

Cultural humility is crucial in healthcare because it fosters respectful and effective patient-provider interactions. By acknowledging their own biases and actively seeking to understand patients' cultural backgrounds, healthcare providers can build trust, improve communication, and tailor care plans that resonate with patients' values and beliefs. This ultimately leads to better health outcomes and reduces disparities experienced by minority groups. (Sayavong et al., 2014, p.59)
