Sentence Case and Title Case

What is the difference between sentence and title case? Find out in Formatting Tips.

Formatting Tips

Chapter Reference Formatting (Print and Electronic)

  • Use this formatting if each chapter has a different author.
  • If the entire book was authored by the same person/people, use the Book - Whole formatting instead of chapter formatting.
  • If you are referencing a book chapter from the online version of the CPS, please use the drug database format when creating your reference.
  • Author: Use the author(s) of the chapter; provide their last name and initials in the order they appear on the title page.
  • Date: Use the date shown on the book’s copyright page as the year of publication in the reference, even if the copyright date is different than the release date.
  • Title: Provide the chapter title in sentence case. Make sure to include the subtitle if there is one.
  • Source: Provide the editors and the book title. Use the abbreviation “(Ed.)” for one editor and the abbreviation “(Eds.)” for multiple editors after the editor names, followed by a period. In the case of multiple editors, include the role once, after all the names.
  • Book title should be italicized and in sentence case. Make sure to include the subtitle if there is one.
  • Include any edition information in the same parentheses as the page range of the chapter, separated with a comma.
  • Do not include the publisher location.
  • For e-Books, if the chapter has a DOI or a stable URL, include the it in the reference after the publisher name. Do not follow with a period.
