Canadian Pharmacist's Letter is a service for pharmacists covering new developments in drug therapy, and trends in pharmacy practice. Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials  Not in Library Search

This bibliographic database of controlled trials was created as part of an international effort to create an unbiased source of data for systematic reviews. It consists of over 350,000 bibliographic references to controlled trials in health care and imposes quality control standards on included references to ensure that only reports of definite randomized controlled trials or controlled clinical trials are included.

Journal contributors include the academic, government, non-profit, and commercial sectors. The journals in DOAJ incorporate a funding model which does not charge users or institutions for access.

This resource comprises three collections:

  • EBSCOhost eBook Clinical Collection: Designed for use in clinical settings, biomedical libraries and academic-medical institutions, this collection features more than 3,500 ebooks that focus on medical specialties, nursing, allied health and general practice areas.
  • EBSCOhost eBook Nursing Collection: This collection features more than 600 ebooks that focus on the needs of nursing professionals, including clinical guides, evidence-based practice manuals, practical handbooks and professional growth titles.
  • EBSCOhost eBook General Collection: This is a broad general collection of ebooks across a variety of subject categories, including surgery, radiology, nursing, infectious diseases, and others. This includes some of the content from the specialized collections listed above.

ECRI Guidelines Trust  Not in Library Search

ECRI Guidelines Trust is a publicly available web-based repository of objective, evidence-based clinical practice guideline content. Its purpose is to provide up-to-date clinical practices to advance safe and effective patient care. This centralized repository includes evidence-based guidance developed by nationally and internationally recognized medical organizations and medical specialty societies.  You will need to register for an account to access guidelines.

Elsevier Science Direct Open Access Journals  Not in Library Search

Elsevier publishes a collection of over 600 open access journals.  All articles in open access journals which are published by Elsevier have undergone peer review and upon acceptance are immediately and permanently free for everyone to read and download.


Emcare, produced by Elsevier, covers all nursing specialties and nursing-related healthcare professions. Examine is a database of nutrition and supplement research summaries and reference information. It includes evidence related to hundreds of specific dietary interventions, health conditions and outcomes, including details on specific supplements as well as broader information about nutrition for health categories. Google Scholar searches for scholarly literature such as journal articles, theses, and reports from a subset of publishers, universities, and societies. Ovid HealthSTAR comprises data from the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) MEDLINE. It contains citations to the published literature on health services, technology, administration, and research. It focuses on both the clinical and non-clinical aspects of health care delivery. The following topics are included: evaluation of patient outcomes; effectiveness of procedures, programs, products, services and processes; administration and planning of health facilities, services and manpower; health insurance; health policy; health services research; health economics and financial management; laws and regulation; personnel administration; quality assurance; licensure; and accreditation.

The Guidelines International Network (G-I-N) seeks to improve the quality of health care by promoting systematic development of clinical practice guidelines and their application into practice, through supporting international collaboration. G-I-N has the world's largest international guideline library containing regularly-updated information and guidelines of the G-I-N membership.

International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO)  Not in Library Search

An international database of prospectively registered systematic reviews in health and social care, welfare, public health, education, crime, justice, and international development, where there is a health related outcome. The library also has access to NEJM Catalyst, which focuses on innovations in healthcare delivery and can be accessed remotely.

The Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC) publishes standards for perioperative registered nurses. To access the Standards:

  1. Click on the ORNAC Standards link above (log in using your WRHA Virtual Library username and password as needed).
  2. Click on My Library on the right side of the screen.
  3. Click on title ORNAC – this will expand a list.
  4. Click on the title ORNAC (or AIISOC for the French equivalent) that now appears under the title you initially clicked on.
  5. On the right side of the screen select the link View Online. Note that the PDF version is not accessible.

PsycINFO is an electronic bibliographic database providing abstracts and citations to the scholarly literature in the psychological, social, behavioral, and health sciences.  The database includes material of relevance to psychologists and professionals in related fields such as psychiatry, management, business, education, social science, neuroscience, law, medicine, and social work. Updated weekly, PsycINFO provides access to journal articles, books, chapters, and dissertations.

PubChem is the world's largest collection of freely accessible chemical information. Search chemicals by name, molecular formula, structure, and other identifiers. Find chemical and physical properties, biological activities, safety and toxicity information, patents, literature citations and more.


PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, provides access to over 11 million citations from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. It includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.



RAND Publications  Not in Library Search

This resource is a topical listing of online publications by RAND, a nonprofit research organization. UpToDate only supports current browsers: Internet Explorer (IE) versions 7-10 and the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Safari.

UpToDate is a full-text information resource supporting clinical decision making in the fields of internal medicine and its subspecialties. It provides options for diagnosis and management based on the most current evidence, including the efficacy, doses, and interactions of individual drugs. WHO MiNDbank is an online platform providing quick and easy access to international resources and national/regional level policies, strategies, laws and service standards for mental health, substance abuse, disability, general health, NCDs, human rights, development, children and youth, and older persons.
